Free Calculator Helps HVAC Contractors Set Labor Rates
A company called EstimateKit has released a free online calculator that helps HVAC (heating and cooling) contractors figure out what to charge per hour for labor. Instead of pricing based on what competitors charge, contractors plug in their technician wages, overhead costs, and target profit margin, and the tool tells them the hourly rate they need to charge to actually stay profitable.
This is industry news rather than something that changes your options directly, but it's worth knowing about because it points to a real issue in HVAC pricing: many smaller contractors haven't updated their labor rates in years, even as wages, insurance, and vehicle costs have risen. That gap can mean a shop loses money on service calls without realizing it, or eventually raises rates sharply to catch up. If you're getting quotes for a repair, installation, or upgrade, it's a reminder that labor rates can vary quite a bit between contractors and aren't always tied closely to actual costs.
The calculator itself is free, doesn't require creating an account, and works on a phone or computer browser. It was built by EstimateKit founder Travis Paivarinta, who said most existing pricing software was designed either for large operations with many trucks or was too basic to be useful, leaving smaller two- or three-truck shops without good tools. There's no homeowner-facing rebate, deadline, or program tied to this news — it's a business tool for contractors, not something you'd use yourself when planning a home energy upgrade.
