Fraunhofer CSP develops ultrathin glass-glass PV modules strengthened by special coating
German researchers and a startup called Exxosqel are testing a new solar panel design that uses much thinner glass than usual, held together with a special coating instead of extra glass thickness. Right now it's just a small demo panel, not something you can buy, but the idea is worth knowing about if you're watching where solar technology is headed.
Standard solar panels use thicker glass for durability, which adds weight and cost. This new coating chemically bonds to the glass surface and helps seal tiny cracks and weak spots, so thinner glass can hold up about as well as thicker glass. In lab tests, thin glass treated with the coating became many times stronger than untreated glass of the same thickness. The company says thinner glass could cut panel weight by up to 40%, which could eventually lower manufacturing and shipping costs.
The catch is hail. Thinner front glass has raised concerns before — a separate study out of India found that glass under 4 mm thick may not survive large hailstones without damage, which matters if you live somewhere with severe storms. The coating's developers say their approach is meant to get around that weakness, but they haven't yet tested full-size panels for hail resistance, so that claim is still unproven. For now, this is early-stage research rather than something showing up on rooftops. If it works as hoped, it could eventually mean lighter, cheaper solar panels, including options suited to unusual installations like building facades, but it's too soon to know when or whether that will reach the market.
