Ford’s EV pickup is almost here, promising much more than an affordable price tag
Ford has set a starting price of $28,350 for its new electric pickup, the Fathom, with sales set to begin in early 2027. Production is on track to start in the first quarter of 2027 at Ford's Louisville Assembly Plant, which the company is converting from gas-vehicle manufacturing to electric vehicle production as part of a $5 billion investment.
For homeowners weighing an electric vehicle purchase, a few details stand out. The Fathom will offer bidirectional charging with vehicle-to-load capability, meaning it can supply power to outside devices or equipment rather than only drawing power from an outlet. It will also have more interior passenger space than a Toyota RAV4, a large touchscreen, a digital key, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and built-in Apple Maps navigation with EV-specific routing.
The truck is the first vehicle built on Ford's new manufacturing approach, which uses large single-piece aluminum castings instead of dozens of welded parts, cutting the part count for this section of the truck from 146 to two. Ford says this will let it assemble the Fathom 40 percent faster than other vehicles at the plant, with fewer opportunities for defects.
None of this affects home energy upgrades directly, but if you're considering an EV that can also power equipment or serve as backup capability through vehicle-to-load, this is one to watch as more pricing and availability details emerge closer to its 2027 launch.
