Ford’s $30,000 Fathom EV pickup production launch faces uncertainty

September 30, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 42

Ford's electric pickup truck, the Fathom, may not arrive on the timeline the company previously promised. Ford had said production would start in early 2027 at its Louisville Assembly Plant, with the truck going on sale shortly after at a starting price of $28,350. But Ford CEO Jim Farley now says that schedule is uncertain, calling it "a heck of an effort to launch this at scale, at cost, on time."

The holdup relates to cost, not just manufacturing logistics. Ford found that a comparable electric truck from Chinese automaker BYD would have roughly a 20% cost advantage on its battery alone. To compete, Ford redesigned the truck's motors, gearboxes, and inverters so it could use a smaller, less expensive battery. That re-engineering is part of what's creating delays. Ford has also set a goal of selling 100,000 Fathoms in the truck's first year, a target that looks harder to hit if production slips.

For homeowners who might want this truck for its ability to power a home or job site, a few features are worth knowing: it's expected to support bidirectional charging, meaning it could send power back out, for example during an outage. It also charges using the same plug type as Tesla's Supercharger network, built-in Apple Maps navigation, and more interior room than a Toyota RAV4. None of this is guaranteed to happen on the original 2027 schedule, so anyone interested in the Fathom should expect the timeline and price to stay unsettled until Ford confirms more details.
