Ford’s $30,000 Fathom EV pickup production launch faces uncertainty [Update]

October 1, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 36

Ford's plans for the Fathom, an electric pickup expected to start at $28,350, are facing some uncertainty. Ford CEO Jim Farley said the automaker hasn't yet figured out how to build the truck "at scale, at cost, on time," pointing to tough competition from Chinese EV maker BYD, whose batteries reportedly have about a 20% cost advantage over Fathom's. Ford says it has redesigned the motors, gearboxes, and inverters to allow for a smaller, cheaper battery pack, but Farley acknowledged the mass-production plan isn't locked down yet.

Despite the uncertain comments, a Ford spokesperson has since said there's no change to the truck's 2027 launch timeline. The company is putting $5 billion into its Louisville, Kentucky assembly plant and a Michigan battery plant to get ready for production, and reports suggest Ford hopes to sell 100,000 Fathoms in the first year.

For homeowners interested in EVs, the Fathom is worth watching because of its price point, well below most electric trucks on the market today. It's expected to offer more interior space than a Toyota RAV4, a large touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Ford's BlueCruise driver-assist system, a NACS charging port (compatible with Tesla Superchargers), and bidirectional charging, meaning the truck could potentially power a home during an outage. Nothing about the launch date has changed yet, but the production challenges Farley described suggest the timeline could still shift.
