Ford bids farewell to the F-150 Lightning as new Fathom and EREV pickups near

September 10, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 37

Ford has pulled the F-150 Lightning, its electric pickup, from sale. The truck was discontinued in December after a run as America's best-selling electric pickup, and Ford's website now treats the page as a farewell rather than a listing.

In its place, Ford is rolling out two new trucks built on a new platform. The first is the Fathom, a smaller all-electric pickup starting at $28,350 (before a $1,595 delivery fee), due in early 2027 with production starting at Ford's Louisville plant. Ford says it will have more interior space than a Toyota RAV4 and will be the first vehicle with Apple Maps built into its navigation. The second replacement is an extended-range electric vehicle, or EREV, which pairs a battery with a gas generator. Ford says this version will offer over 700 miles of total range and run on electricity alone about 90 percent of the time, addressing complaints that pricier all-electric trucks weren't selling well.

This mainly matters if you already own an F-150 Lightning or were considering one. Ford says it will keep supporting current Lightning owners with software updates, service, repairs, and live support, so nothing changes for existing trucks. If you were shopping for one, though, you'll need to wait for the Fathom or the EREV pickup, both expected to arrive in 2027, with more details likely to come before then.
