First-ever Volvo A30 Electric articulated haul trucks get to work

July 3, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 4

This news is about heavy construction equipment, not something that shows up in a driveway, but it's a sign of where electric machinery is headed. Volvo has delivered its first electric articulated haul trucks, called the A30 Electric, to a contractor in Norway working on a hydropower project. These are large 30-ton trucks used to move material at construction sites, and this marks the first time they've gone from prototype to actual job-site use.

The trucks run on a 245 kWh battery and a 350 kW electric motor, with enough power to match diesel equivalents while producing zero emissions. That matters on this particular project because the trucks will operate inside a tunnel being built for the hydropower plant, where running electric instead of diesel means cleaner air underground for workers. The hydropower project itself is expected to produce more than 100 GWh of renewable electricity a year once finished in 2029.

There's no direct link here to home energy upgrades or rebates. But it's a data point on the broader shift toward electrifying heavy equipment, which can factor into how "green" large infrastructure and energy projects are from the start. If you're tracking where your electricity might eventually come from, projects like this hydropower plant, built with lower-emission construction methods, are part of that supply picture, even if the equipment itself has nothing to do with your own house.
