A recent episode of the Fine Homebuilding Podcast tackled a listener question about insulating an old garage floor. Greg, from Charlton, New York, has a two-car garage and workshop built into a walkout basement, about 25 feet by 25 feet, with block walls from the 1970s. The slab has no insulation or poly (a plastic vapor barrier) underneath it. Greg's plan is to lay 1-inch rigid foam board (XPS) over the existing slab, then top it with two layers of half-inch plywood to create a floor he can work on.

His main question was how to handle the edges of that new floor system where it meets the garage walls: whether to leave the perimeter vented to outside air or seal it up tight. The podcast hosts discussed the tradeoffs of each approach for this kind of retrofit, since sealing versus venting affects how moisture and heat move through the assembly.
