FHB Podcast Segment: A New Approach to Bonfiglioli Wall Insulation
A recent Fine Homebuilding podcast episode dug into a listener question about insulating a post-frame building he's converting into a cabin. He'd planned to use the Bonfiglioli method, a wall-building approach that adds rigid foam insulation to the inside of the framing, then wood strips on top of that foam to hold the drywall. Those strips are meant to break the "thermal bridge," the path where heat can slip through solid wood studs and bypass the insulation. His original plan called for 1-inch foam board, wood strapping, 5.5-inch-deep walls, and exterior girts (horizontal framing members).
The listener then asked the hosts about a simpler alternative: using just a thin, 1/4-inch layer of foam directly on the studs and other wood surfaces, skipping the wood strapping entirely, and attaching the drywall with fasteners instead. The point of the question was whether this smaller, simpler change could still meaningfully cut down on heat loss through the wall.
This is a technical framing and insulation question aimed at someone building a post-frame cabin from scratch, not a typical retrofit for an existing house.
