Electric and plug-in hybrid cars made up 67% of new car sales in Sweden in the second quarter of 2026, up from 62.5% a year earlier. Fully electric models (BEVs) alone hit 42% of sales, while plug-in hybrids took 25%. Gas and diesel cars are down to just 25.7% of the market. Total car sales for the quarter were 79,891, up 22% from last year. A new incentive program launched this year, aimed at lower-income households in rural areas, appears to be helping push electric sales higher.
The Volvo EX40 was the top-selling electric model for the fourth quarter in a row, followed by the Tesla Model Y and the Volvo EX30. Several newer models saw strong gains, including the redesigned BMW iX3 and Kia's newer EV lineup (the PV5, EV5, EV4, and EV2). A handful of new models also debuted in the market, including electric versions from Subaru, Cupra, Porsche, Xpeng, Lexus, and Zeekr, though pricing on some of these, like the Cupra Raval, runs higher than in other European countries.
None of this changes rebate programs or incentives available to homeowners in the United States, since this news covers car sales trends in Sweden. But it does show how strongly electric vehicle adoption can grow when incentives are paired with a wider range of model choices, something worth watching if you are weighing an EV alongside other home energy upgrades like a heat pump or added insulation.
