EVs Take 34.5% Share In France — Renault & Tesla Dominate

July 24, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 8

Electric and plug-in hybrid cars made up 34.5% of new car sales in France in the second quarter of 2026, up from 23.9% a year earlier. Fully electric cars (BEVs) alone jumped to 28.3% of sales, up from 17.1%, while plug-in hybrids dipped slightly to 6.2%. Sales of pure gas and diesel cars kept falling and now account for less than 18% of the market, with most remaining gas cars using some form of hybrid assist.

The jump in electric car sales is tied to two things: France improved its purchase incentives for 2026, and fuel prices have been rising. One example is Renault's new Twingo, an affordable electric model that launched in March. It qualifies for a bonus incentive worth roughly €3,500 to €5,700 depending on household income, which the similarly sized Dacia Spring does not get. That gap makes the Twingo about €2,000 cheaper in practice, and it's already outselling the Spring by close to two to one. The Tesla Model Y remained the best-selling electric model overall, narrowly ahead of the Renault 5.

None of this changes rules or rebates for homes outside France, but it's a sign that electric vehicles are becoming markedly more competitive on price in markets with strong purchase incentives. If you're weighing an EV purchase alongside home upgrades like a charger or solar, it's worth checking what incentives are currently available where you live, since they can shift the math the same way they did in France.
