EVs outsell petrol in Australia for the first time, led by China

September 3, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 9

Electric cars outsold gas-only vehicles in Australia for the first time in August. Battery-electric vehicles made up 24.9% of new car sales, beating both petrol and diesel. Counting hybrids and plug-in hybrids too, electrified vehicles took 51.8% of the market, the first time combustion-only cars have fallen into the minority there.

The surge was driven almost entirely by Chinese automakers. Seven of the eight best-selling EV models came from Chinese brands like BYD, Geely, Zeekr, and Chery's Jaecoo. The other two were Tesla's Model Y and Model 3, but Tesla builds all its right-hand-drive cars for Australia at its Shanghai factory, so every one of the top eight best-selling EVs was made in China. The Tesla Model Y was the single top-selling model, and BYD edged out Tesla as a brand overall thanks to a wider range of models. Meanwhile, established brands like Toyota, Mazda, and Kia saw sales slide.

This is mostly a story about Australia's market rules rather than anything specific to a US or other homeowner's situation: Australia has few tariffs on Chinese EVs, unlike the US or Europe, which is why cheap, capable Chinese models are flooding in and pushing adoption faster than elsewhere. It doesn't change what's available or affordable where you live, but it's a preview of how quickly EV adoption can move when prices drop and choices expand.
