Elon Musk hints at Tesla (TSLA)-SpaceX merger on earnings call
This is corporate and financial news, not a home energy story, so there's nothing here that affects a homeowner's own upgrade plans or rebate eligibility. Still, here's what happened: on Tesla's latest earnings call, Elon Musk hinted that Tesla and SpaceX could eventually combine, pointing to "more and more overlap" between the companies, including a shared semiconductor manufacturing project called Terafab, and the use of SpaceX's Starlink internet and xAI's Grok software in Tesla vehicles. He stopped short of confirming a merger, saying it would need to go through "the appropriate process" rather than be discussed on an earnings call.
Tesla's general counsel confirmed the two companies signed a framework agreement earlier this year tied to Tesla's investment in SpaceX. That investment, originally $2 billion in xAI, was converted into a small stake in SpaceX. Notably, most of Tesla's reported profit this quarter came from a paper gain on that SpaceX stake rather than from car or energy sales, and SpaceX's value has since dropped, which could turn that gain into a loss next quarter.
None of this involves home energy equipment, rebates, or efficiency programs. It's purely a story about Tesla's corporate structure and Musk's business dealings, with no bearing on solar, batteries, or home upgrades.
