Electric Mining Truck Uses Sodium-Ion Batteries
A Chinese battery maker, Hina Battery, has teamed up with Shaanxi Tonly Heavy Industries to build what they say is the world's first electric mining truck to run on sodium-ion batteries. Sodium-ion is a newer battery type that, unlike the lithium-ion batteries in most EVs, uses sodium instead of lithium. The first truck has been delivered to a mining company called Sanyou Mining. Its battery pack holds 676 kWh of energy, roughly enough to power around 10 electric cars, reflecting the huge scale of mining equipment compared to a household vehicle.
Hina Battery says its battery system can charge fully in 20 to 25 minutes and still handle more than 8,000 charge cycles even when fast-charged repeatedly. The company points to sodium-ion's long lifespan, wide tolerance for temperature swings, and fast-charging ability as good matches for mining sites, which need smaller battery packs, quick turnaround, and heavy daily use.
This news has no direct bearing on home energy upgrades — it is about heavy industrial equipment, not household batteries or appliances. But it is a sign that sodium-ion battery technology is moving out of the lab and into real-world, heavy-duty use. Sodium-ion batteries use more abundant, cheaper materials than lithium-ion ones, so as the technology matures and scales up, it could eventually show up in smaller products, including home battery storage, though nothing in this report suggests that is happening yet.
