Electrek American Solar Challenge 2026: About the race, full schedule, and teams competing

July 3, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 9

This is a college racing event, not a home upgrade story, but it's worth noting for anyone curious about solar technology in action. A record 42 college teams from the US, Canada, Belgium, and the Netherlands are competing in the Formula Sun Grand Prix, a track race for hand-built solar-powered cars, held July 21-23 at Brainerd International Raceway in Minnesota. The event is free and open to the public, with only a waiver required to attend.

Teams that qualify move on to the American Solar Challenge, an 8-day, 1,500-plus mile road race from Minneapolis to Amarillo, Texas, running July 25 through August 1. The route follows the Great River Road and part of historic Route 66, marking that highway's 100th anniversary. A free public display of the cars happens July 24 at the University of Minnesota before the cars set out.

None of this changes rebates, tax credits, or home equipment choices. It is a showcase of student-engineered solar vehicles, split into single-occupant cars built for efficiency and multi-occupant cars built for practicality. For anyone interested in how solar cells and battery systems perform in real-world conditions, the race offers a look at the technology in a different context than rooftop panels or home batteries, but there is no direct connection to home energy programs or costs.
