East And West Coasts Throw Electric Truck Shade At White House

September 7, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 38

This news is mostly about freight trucks, not home upgrades, but it points to bigger energy trends worth knowing about. Diesel prices just hit a record $5.85 a gallon, which is pushing states and port authorities to speed up the switch to electric trucks. On the East Coast, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is putting $45 million toward electric trucks, yard equipment, and up to five new truck charging hubs near its port facilities, funded through a federal Clean Ports grant issued in 2024.

On the West Coast, California, Oregon, and Washington have teamed up with British Columbia and Baja California to build a new charging corridor along Interstate-5, called "BC2BC." The first phase includes 20 electric charging stations and 3 hydrogen fueling stations for trucks making the drive from Canada to Mexico. Truck makers including Tesla and a company called ZM Trucks are part of the rollout.

None of this changes what's available for your own home right now — no new rebates or programs for homeowners are part of this news. But it's a sign that states are still pushing ahead on electrification and charging infrastructure even as federal support for EVs has weakened, and that diesel and gas prices are climbing. If you're weighing an electric vehicle purchase or charger installation at home, it's worth keeping an eye on whether your state follows a similar path with incentives, since West Coast and Northeast states have generally been the most aggressive on this front.
