Department of War drafts EV battery factory into military drone duty with $75M grant

October 5, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 31

This is industry news with no direct effect on home energy upgrades, but it touches a company whose technology sometimes appears in consumer-adjacent manufacturing. The U.S. Department of War has given battery maker Amprius Technologies a $75 million grant to convert an existing U.S. electric-vehicle battery production line into a line that makes high-energy-density batteries for military drones. The factory, run by a South Korean manufacturing partner, currently builds batteries meant for EVs. Under this grant, part of that line will instead produce battery cells for small and medium military drones, known in the program as Group 1, 2, and 3 unmanned aerial systems.

The money comes from the Pentagon's Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment Program, which funds manufacturing the government considers important for national security. Amprius says the project will add about $25 million in additional funding from other sources and is expected to finish by early 2028, with the converted line able to produce 12 million battery cells a year for military use.

For homeowners, this doesn't change any rebate, tax credit, or home upgrade program. It's a reminder that the battery technology and manufacturing capacity built up for electric vehicles and home energy storage can also be redirected toward other uses, including defense needs. There's no change here to heat pump programs, weatherization funding, or home electrification incentives.
