Dangote refinery drives increase in petroleum shipments from Nigeria

August 24, 2026 · EIA Today in Energy · Score: 0

This is global energy market news, not something tied to a specific home upgrade or rebate. It does not affect decisions about insulation, heat pumps, or weatherization, but it is worth knowing about if you follow energy prices and supply.

The story is about Nigeria's Dangote refinery, which opened in January 2024 and has sharply increased the country's shipments of refined petroleum products like gasoline and diesel. Shipments grew from about 79,000 barrels a day in 2023 to 561,000 barrels a day in the second quarter of 2026. Nigeria used to import large amounts of fuel — nearly 400,000 barrels a day in 2023 — but now imports less than 130,000 barrels a day, because the refinery supplies more of the country's own needs. At the same time, Nigeria's exports have grown, especially to Europe, which was importing 130,000 barrels a day from Nigeria by mid-2026, up from just 15,000 in 2023.

This shift matters globally because it comes as other supply routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, have faced disruptions. More fuel from Nigeria helps offset those constraints. The refinery also finished a maintenance and expansion in February 2026 that raised its capacity, and its owner plans to roughly double capacity again by 2028. None of this changes anything about home energy upgrades or rebates, but it is part of the backdrop that can influence fuel prices.
