CuspAI launches global materials discovery network alongside solar industry partners
A UK startup called CuspAI has launched a global research network aimed at using artificial intelligence to discover new materials, including ones used in solar panels. The group includes more than 45 partner organizations, among them NVIDIA, Meta, and solar-related companies like Oxford PV, Caelux, 3M, and Fujifilm. The idea is to use AI to sort through huge numbers of possible material combinations quickly, then test the most promising ones in the lab, cutting down years of trial-and-error research.
One example given: the AI system screened 300 trillion possible molecular structures for a chemical company and narrowed the list to 20 worth testing further, work that reportedly would have taken years by older methods but took six months this way. In the solar world, partners like Oxford PV and Caelux work on perovskite materials, a newer type of solar cell material that can boost how much power a panel produces. Faster discovery of better materials could eventually mean solar panels that are cheaper to make or more efficient.

But it is part of a broader trend of AI being used to speed up clean energy technology, including efforts by Google and Microsoft on similar materials-discovery tools.
