CS PowerTech Launches Best In Class PV HJT Solar Cell Factory

July 25, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 35

Canadian Solar's manufacturing arm, CS PowerTech, has opened the first phase of a new solar cell factory in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The plant is the first in the U.S. built to produce heterojunction (HJT) solar cells, a newer cell design that combines two silicon layer types to capture more sunlight and hold up better in heat, which can mean more electricity from the same size panel. Paired with the company's existing module plant in Mesquite, Texas, the move brings more solar panel production onto U.S. soil rather than relying on imported cells.

At full capacity, the Indiana facility is expected to make more than 6 gigawatts of cells a year and employ over 1,200 people, with close to $1 billion invested in the site. Production will ramp up over the next few months, and the company plans to start a second expansion phase before the end of the year.

For a homeowner, this isn't something requiring any immediate decision. It's a supply-chain development: more domestic HJT cell manufacturing could eventually mean more U.S.-made solar panels reaching installers, and possibly some insulation from overseas supply disruptions or tariffs down the road. If you're weighing solar for your roof, it's worth knowing that HJT is a higher-efficiency cell technology increasingly showing up in newer panel lines, so you may start seeing installers offer it as an option. No pricing, rebate, or availability details for individual homeowners were part of this announcement.
