Commonwealth Fusion Systems aims to complete demonstration reactor with $1B funding round

August 24, 2026 · Utility Dive · Score: 12

A company called Commonwealth Fusion Systems has raised $1 billion, bringing its total funding to $4 billion, to finish building a demonstration fusion reactor called SPARC in Massachusetts. Fusion is a way of generating power by fusing atoms together, similar to how the sun makes energy, rather than splitting them apart like conventional nuclear plants do. It produces far less radioactive waste than today's nuclear reactors. The company says SPARC is about 80% complete and expects to show it can produce more energy than it takes in by 2027.

The bigger plan is a commercial power plant in Virginia, built on land leased from the utility Dominion Energy, aiming to come online in the early 2030s. Google and the energy company ENI have already agreed to buy power from it. Other companies, including Type One Energy, Helion, and TAE Technologies, are chasing similar goals with different reactor designs, but none have yet proven their technology works at commercial scale.

None of this changes anything about your home right now. Fusion power is still years away from actually feeding electricity into the grid, and even the companies working on it describe real technical hurdles left to solve. If it eventually works, it could mean more low-carbon power on the grid in Virginia and other places utilities are planning around it, but there's no timeline yet for widespread use or any effect on electricity rates or availability for homeowners.
