Climate Change Is Rewriting Europe’s Nuclear Cooling Assumptions
This summer's heat and drought in Europe caused problems for nuclear power plants that need river water to cool their reactors. In Romania, low water levels on the Danube forced engineers to blast rock out of a canal to redirect more water toward the Cernavodă nuclear plant, and one of its two reactors had already shut down. In Hungary, the Paks plant, which normally supplies almost half the country's electricity, lost most of its output when water levels dropped. France and Switzerland faced a different version of the same problem: river water was too warm, so reactors had to cut back to avoid overheating rivers further and harming aquatic life.
The bigger issue is that nuclear plants built decades ago were designed around water temperature and flow patterns that no longer hold up as reliably. Scientists have found that recent heatwaves were made significantly hotter by climate change, and the drought conditions affecting rivers like the Danube were also intensified by it. Because extreme heat, low water, and high electricity demand for air conditioning tend to hit at the same time, this creates real strain on power grids.
