Climate Change Is Happening, So Let’s Just Enjoy The Warmth! — Reform UK

August 18, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 12

A UK political row has broken out over climate policy after Richard Tice, deputy leader of the Reform UK party, said Britain should stop trying to fight climate change and instead "enjoy" hotter weather, suggesting warmer temperatures could even improve English wine. His comments came during a record-breaking summer in which UK temperatures topped 35°C (95°F) several times. The government estimates 2,877 people died from high temperatures during the May and June heatwaves alone, twice the toll from all of summer 2025, with costs to the economy put at roughly £4 billion.

Health and farming groups pushed back hard. Nurses described hospitals hitting 36°C and corridors full of patients suffering heat-related illness. A new study in The Lancet, led by Stanford researchers, found older people are harmed by heat at lower temperatures than previously thought, and that far more people worldwide face "uncompensable heat stress," a condition where the body can no longer cool itself. Farmers are reporting one of the worst harvests on record, and wildfires have hit the Midlands, Wales, and Northern Ireland this year. Reform UK has also pledged to scrap the UK's 2050 net-zero target and end green subsidies if elected.

For homeowners, this is a political and public-health story rather than one with a direct program or rebate attached. It's a reminder that extreme heat, drought, and wildfire risk are already showing up in ordinary British summers, and that the UK's broader climate and energy policy could shift depending on how this debate plays out.
