China TOPCon solar module prices rise on upstream cost pressure as deals lag offers

August 28, 2026 · PV Magazine USA · Score: 52

Prices for solar panels made in China are ticking up, mainly because of new U.S. tariffs on solar supply chains set to take effect December 4. Those tariffs will set minimum import prices for the ingots, wafers, cells, and modules that go into solar panels, and the anticipation of that change is already pushing costs higher across the industry. A common panel type (TOPCon) rose nearly 3% in a week, according to industry pricing data.

For homeowners, this is more about the broader solar market than an immediate price jump at your door. Buyers and manufacturers both say the increases are driven by short-term tariff expectations rather than any lasting shift in supply or demand, and actual deals being signed are coming in below the higher asking prices. Some manufacturers have even paused buying raw materials or paused quoting longer-term contracts while they wait to see how costs settle.

The bigger question the industry is watching is whether manufacturers absorb these higher costs themselves or pass them on to buyers. If costs get passed through, it could eventually raise prices for solar projects, including installations here. But right now, panel prices for overseas projects, including deals for 2027 delivery, remain largely flat. If you're weighing a solar installation, this is worth keeping an eye on as the December tariff deadline approaches, since it could affect equipment costs and installer quotes in the months ahead.
