CATL’s 30-year sodium-ion battery takes over grid storage
Battery maker CATL has agreed to supply 5 GWh of a new type of battery, called sodium-ion, for grid energy storage projects across Europe, starting in 2027. This isn't a home product, but it's worth knowing about because it points to where battery technology and costs are heading, which can eventually trickle down to home batteries paired with solar panels.
The appeal of sodium-ion batteries is longevity and cost, not raw power. CATL says its version is rated for 15,000 charge cycles and a 25-to-30-year lifespan, well beyond the few thousand to 10,000 cycles typical of the lithium batteries used in most home and grid storage today. Sodium is also far more abundant and cheaper than lithium, and these batteries reportedly hold up better in extreme cold and heat without extra insulation or cooling equipment, which could lower costs further. CATL also cites safety improvements, including less risk of the battery swelling or venting gas.
This deal follows a string of other sodium-ion moves in 2026, including a 60 GWh supply agreement with another company and growing interest from US firms and automakers like GM. None of this changes what's available for home batteries right now, but if sodium-ion batteries prove out at grid scale, the same cost and durability advantages could eventually show up in battery systems homeowners install alongside solar panels.
