BYD’s ultra-luxury EV sedan with coach doors spotted ahead of imminent debut [Video]
This one is about a car, not your house. BYD, the Chinese automaker, is preparing to launch a new ultra-luxury electric sedan under its Yangwang brand, and a disguised prototype was recently spotted testing in China. The car is about 5.5 meters long, roughly the size of a Rolls-Royce Phantom, and has rear-hinged "coach doors" (doors that open from the back, like old-fashioned carriage doors), a first for a BYD vehicle. It was also seen at one of BYD's ultra-fast "Flash Charging" stations, suggesting it can charge at very high power.
The bigger story may be the battery. Local reports say this could be BYD's first production car with a solid-state battery, a next-generation battery type that promises more range and faster charging than today's lithium batteries. BYD has said its first solid-state model will arrive in 2027, with mass production ramping up around 2030. If this sedan does get the new battery, it would likely be limited to pricier trims, with standard versions sticking to BYD's existing Blade LFP batteries.
None of this is available in the US, and there's no price or release date confirmed yet, though local reports suggest a cost of over 2 million yuan, close to $300,000. For homeowners, there's no rebate or purchase decision here. It's worth watching mainly because solid-state batteries, once they mature and trickle down to mainstream vehicles, could eventually mean faster charging and longer range for the kind of EV you might park in your own driveway.
