BYD’s new 5-seat electric SUV has a range of over 1,000 km and 5-minute charging
This is car news, not a home energy upgrade story, but here's what it means for anyone curious about electric vehicles. BYD, the Chinese automaker, has revealed a new all-electric version of its Denza N8 SUV, a five-seat model with a claimed range of 1,003 km (about 623 miles) on a full charge. That figure comes from China's CLTC testing standard, which tends to produce higher numbers than the EPA ratings used in the US, so real-world range on American roads would likely be lower.
The bigger news is charging speed. BYD says its "Flash Charging" technology lets the N8 go from 10% to 70% battery in just five minutes, and to 97% in nine minutes. That's close to the time it takes to fill a gas tank. The vehicle uses BYD's latest battery technology and comes with a choice of a single rear motor or a more powerful tri-motor all-wheel-drive setup producing nearly 1,200 horsepower.
For now, this is a China-market vehicle, confirmed through a government filing rather than a full product launch, and BYD does not sell cars in the US. So there's no direct way for American homeowners to buy one. But it's a sign of how fast EV charging speeds and battery ranges are improving industry-wide, which matters if you're weighing an EV purchase and thinking about home charging equipment down the road.
