BYD’s low-cost electric hatch is about to get a bigger sibling

August 25, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 0

This one is car news, not home energy news, so it won't affect any home upgrade or rebate plans. Briefly, for context: Chinese automaker BYD is launching a new electric hatchback called the Great Seagull, a bigger version of its budget Seagull model (sold outside China as the Dolphin Surf or Dolphin Mini). The current Seagull starts at about $10,000 in China and has been one of the best-selling EVs in the world.

The Great Seagull will be noticeably larger than the current car and will use a more powerful electric motor. BYD hasn't released battery details or pricing yet, but the car is expected to cost a bit more than the current Seagull and may include newer battery and fast-charging technology, along with upgraded safety and interior features. BYD says the car will go on sale by the end of 2026.

None of this affects home energy upgrades or rebate programs. It's simply an update on a new international EV model from BYD, a Chinese automaker that does not currently sell vehicles in the U.S.
