BYD’s electric GT resurfaces after its first public sighting
This is car news, not a home energy story, so there's not much here for planning upgrades to your house. Still, here's what's happening: Chinese automaker BYD's electric "shooting-brake" SUV, the Song L EV GT, was recently spotted in public without camouflage for the first time, about a year after it was first revealed and approved for sale by Chinese regulators.
The Song L GT is a sportier version of BYD's existing Song L EV, an all-electric SUV about the size of a Tesla Model Y. It comes in three drivetrain options, including a dual-motor all-wheel-drive version with a combined 523 horsepower. BYD hasn't released pricing or battery details for the GT, but the standard Song L EV starts around $28,000 and can travel up to 411 miles on a charge (by the Chinese CLTC testing standard, which tends to be more generous than U.S. estimates). The GT is expected to use BYD's newer Blade Battery 2.0 and fast-charging technology, which the company says can recharge a vehicle in as little as five minutes.
None of this involves a U.S. release, and BYD vehicles aren't sold in the American market. For homeowners thinking about EVs as part of a broader energy setup, such as pairing a vehicle with home charging or solar, this is mostly a signal of how fast battery and charging technology is advancing elsewhere, not something to act on yet.
