BYD’s $10,000 Seagull EV revealed with a longer body and more upgrades
This one is outside the home energy space, but here's the short version: BYD, the Chinese automaker, is rolling out an updated version of its Seagull EV, a small electric hatchback that starts around $10,000 in China. The car is sold overseas as the Dolphin Surf (in Europe and the UK, starting around $25,000-$26,000) and the Dolphin Mini in other markets. It's already one of the world's best-selling EVs, with more than 125,000 sold in the first five months of 2026.
The new version, revealed through a Chinese regulatory filing, is longer and rides on a bigger wheelbase, with a more powerful electric motor than the current model. Battery details for the update haven't been released, but the current Seagull offers two battery sizes with driving ranges up to about 190 or 251 miles. Higher-end trims add a bigger touchscreen and an optional advanced driver-assist system with radar-like sensing for automated parking and highway or city driving assistance.
None of this changes anything about home energy upgrades or rebates, since BYD doesn't sell vehicles in the US. But it's a sign of how fast low-cost EV technology is moving elsewhere, which matters if you're weighing an electric vehicle as part of a broader home electrification plan, alongside things like a heat pump or solar. For now, this news is about the global EV market, not something that changes your options at home.
