BYD wins 11.3 GWh battery deal for world’s largest solar+storage

July 10, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 23

BYD, the Chinese battery and EV maker, has won a contract to supply 11.3 gigawatt-hours of battery storage for a huge solar-plus-storage plant being built in Abu Dhabi by Masdar and the Emirates Water and Electricity Company. The full project pairs a 5.2 gigawatt solar farm with 19 gigawatt-hours of batteries, making it the largest combined solar and storage plant in the world. Its goal is to deliver steady, round-the-clock clean power rather than only power when the sun is out, which has always been solar's main limitation.

Worth noting: the remaining 7.5 gigawatt-hours of storage went to another Chinese company, Sungrow, meaning Chinese battery makers now supply the entire project, even though Masdar originally named a different Chinese supplier, CATL, as its preferred vendor. This shows how much Chinese firms now dominate large-scale battery storage, using the same big-cell manufacturing that already makes them the world's largest EV battery producers.

None of this changes anything for your own house directly, since it's a giant utility-scale project overseas. But it does point to a broader trend: battery storage paired with solar is getting cheaper and more capable at every scale, from massive desert power plants down to home battery systems. As these bigger projects push prices down and technology forward, it's a sign that the economics of pairing solar panels with home battery storage are likely to keep improving in the years ahead.
