BYD releases the first official images of the ‘bigger’ Seagull EV ahead of its debut

September 24, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 0

This one is about a car, not a home upgrade, so there's not much direct connection to your house — but here's what's happening. BYD, the Chinese automaker, has shown early sketches of a redesigned version of its Seagull, one of the cheapest electric vehicles sold anywhere. In China, the current Seagull starts around $10,000, far below any new car sold in the US, where the cheapest option is the 2026 Hyundai Venue at just over $20,500. Overseas, the same car is sold as the Dolphin Surf or Dolphin Mini and starts around $26,500 in Europe.

The new version, reportedly called the "Great Seagull," will be noticeably bigger and more powerful, with a stronger electric motor and a redesigned interior featuring a larger touchscreen and new steering wheel. Regulatory filings show it will grow in length, width, and wheelbase compared to the current model. It's expected to launch in China by the end of 2026, with a European version likely to follow, possibly priced under $35,000.

None of this is sold in the US, and BYD vehicles aren't currently available to American buyers because of trade restrictions on Chinese-made EVs. For homeowners thinking about EV charging setups or home energy planning, this doesn't change anything immediately, but it's a sign that affordable electric vehicles keep advancing quickly overseas, which could shape what eventually becomes available closer to home.
