BYD launches the ‘world’s first’ SDV kei EV, starting at just $13,000

July 28, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 1

This is a car story, not a home energy upgrade story, so it has little direct bearing on your house. Still, here's what happened: BYD has launched a small electric car in Japan called the Racco, aimed at the country's "kei car" category — tiny, affordable vehicles built for narrow city streets. It's the first of these light EVs built on what BYD calls an "SDV" (software-defined vehicle) platform, meaning its onboard software can get updates the way a smartphone does, adding features over time.

Pricing starts around ¥2,145,000 (about $13,000) before Japan's government EV subsidy of ¥150,000 (about $900), which brings the entry price down to roughly $12,200. The base version uses a 22.4 kWh battery for about 130 miles of range, while pricier trims get a larger 35.84 kWh battery good for up to about 199 miles — BYD says that makes it the first kei EV in Japan to top 300 km of range. Leases start around $115 a month. It's positioned against Japan's popular Honda N-Box (gas-powered, slightly cheaper) and the Nissan Sakura, currently Japan's best-selling EV, which the Racco undercuts on price while offering more range.

For a homeowner in the US thinking about home electrification or EV charging, this doesn't change anything directly — it's a Japan-market vehicle. It's worth knowing about mainly as a sign that battery costs and EV competition keep shifting globally, which can eventually affect what electric vehicles and charging equipment show up in other markets.
