BYD Continuing the Robot Craze — Is This Like The Smartphone Revolution Or VR Headsets?

July 28, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 3

This one is about robots, not home energy upgrades, so there's not much here that affects your house directly. Chinese automaker BYD teased a humanoid robot on social media, and reports suggest a public prototype could show up at an event in early August. BYD executive Stella Li recently said the company wants to put two or three robots in every store. Other automakers, including Tesla, Hyundai, and XPENG, are also working on humanoid robots.

The bigger question raised is whether humanoid robots will actually turn out to be useful for everyday tasks like cleaning, cooking, or helping customers in stores, or whether the current excitement fades the way virtual reality headsets did after a lot of hype and investment. Robot vacuums already exist for floor cleaning, and it is unclear whether a general-purpose humanoid robot would do a better job at chores than a machine built for one specific task.

None of this involves rebates, home electrification, or efficiency programs, and there is no new information here about costs, availability, or a timeline for humanoid robots reaching homes. If that changes with real products and prices down the road, it could eventually matter for how houses get built or maintained, but for now this is just a look at where robot technology is heading, not something that changes your options for home upgrades.
