This is a car sales story, not a home upgrade story, but it touches on the broader shift toward electric vehicles that some homeowners are weighing alongside things like solar panels or a home charger.
Chinese automaker BYD sold 256,230 fully electric cars in August, up 28.4% from a year earlier and up 9.9% from July. Sales of its plug-in hybrids, which run on both gas and electric power, barely moved: 177,154 in August, roughly flat month to month and up just 3% from a year ago. Combined, BYD's total passenger vehicle sales for the month hit 433,384, up 16.7% year over year.
Looking at the whole year so far, BYD's fully electric sales are still slightly behind last year's pace (down about 3%), while plug-in hybrid sales are down more sharply, around 11%. That suggests buyers are increasingly favoring fully electric cars over the hybrid option, at least at BYD.
None of this changes anything about US rebates, incentives, or charger installations at your house. BYD does not sell cars in the US market covered by this site's usual programs. The news is mainly a signal of where the broader electric vehicle market is heading globally: fully electric models gaining ground on hybrids. If you're weighing an electric vehicle purchase alongside a home charger or solar setup, this is a reminder that electric-only models are becoming the dominant choice worldwide, even as hybrid options remain available for buyers who aren't ready to go fully electric.
