BYD, the world's largest electric vehicle maker, posted strong sales growth in July. The company sold 411,072 passenger vehicles worldwide, up 20.5% from July 2025 and up 3.5% from June. Battery-electric vehicle sales, meaning cars powered only by a battery rather than a gas engine, rose 31% year over year to 233,105, making it the second-best month ever for that category. Plug-in hybrid sales, which combine a battery with a gas engine, rose 9.1% from a year earlier but slipped 9.1% from June, landing at 177,967.
Despite the strong July, BYD is still down for the year overall. Across the first seven months of 2026, total plug-in vehicle sales are down 10.8%, battery-electric sales are down 8.4%, and plug-in hybrid sales are down 13.2% compared with the same period last year. New models are reaching the market and supply issues appear to be easing, which points toward more growth in coming months.
This news is mostly a snapshot of the global EV market rather than something that changes what's available to a homeowner right now. BYD is not a major brand in the U.S. market, so this sales surge is more relevant to buyers in China and other regions where BYD sells directly. If you're weighing an electric vehicle purchase alongside home upgrades like a charger or solar panels, it's still worth checking which EV brands and models are actually sold and supported where you live before this kind of global sales trend affects your options.
