Building quality domestic U.S. cell fabs is more important than technology-choice today

October 6, 2026 · PV Magazine USA · Score: 2

The U.S. solar industry is in the early stages of building its own factories to make solar cells, the components that make up solar panels. Industry analysts say the real story isn't how much total production capacity gets announced, or which cell technology companies pick first, but whether the factories being built are actually high quality, well run, and capable of producing cells efficiently at scale.

Right now, U.S. cell production is starting from a very low base, though output has been growing steadily over the past several quarters. Forecasts suggest production could climb through 2027, with a stronger outcome possible if existing factories run at high output and new expansions come online faster than expected. Some manufacturers have chosen older, well-tested cell technology to avoid patent disputes, while others have picked newer types. But experts say this shouldn't be read as a sign of where the whole industry is headed, since cell production lines can often be upgraded or switched between technologies fairly easily. The bigger question is whether the U.S. can build a solid base of 20 to 30 gigawatts of high-quality cell factories by around 2029.

For homeowners, this doesn't change anything about rebates or costs today. It is background on where the solar panels installed on American roofs may eventually be made, and whether a stronger domestic supply chain develops over the next few years. Bigger shifts in U.S. cell manufacturing are expected to show up starting in 2028.
