Branch Energy heads to PJM to sell battery capacity to data centers

September 15, 2026 · Latitude Media · Score: 42

Branch Energy, a company that installs battery systems for businesses, is expanding into PJM, the grid region covering much of the mid-Atlantic and parts of the Midwest, by way of Illinois. It raised $33 million to fund the move. The company builds and runs batteries at commercial and industrial sites, then bundles them into a "virtual power plant" — a network of smaller batteries that together act like one large power source for the grid. In PJM, Branch plans to sign long-term contracts with data center operators, who are increasingly financing new power capacity, including batteries, to get connected to the grid faster.

This is part of a broader trend of data centers paying for battery capacity anywhere on the grid to speed up their own power hookups, a framework known as "bring your own capacity." A similar company, Base Power, has already expanded into PJM the same way, though Base builds its own batteries while Branch buys them and focuses on the software that runs them. Branch's batteries are installed at businesses, not homes, and are much larger than typical home batteries.

None of this involves homeowners directly — Branch's batteries go on commercial properties, not houses. But it points to growing competition for battery capacity and grid connections as data centers expand, which can affect electricity prices and grid planning in the regions where this is happening. For homeowners in PJM's territory, it's a sign that battery and grid investment in your area is likely to accelerate in the coming years.
