BMW’s new iX4 has 428 miles of range, but it starts at north of $66,000 [Images]
BMW has revealed its new electric iX4, a coupe-style SUV that goes on sale in March 2027. The base version, the iX4 50 xDrive, starts at $66,200 plus a $1,495 destination fee, and BMW says it can travel up to 428 miles on a single charge thanks to a 112.2 kWh battery. A faster-charging 800V electrical system lets it add up to 184 miles of range in about 10 minutes. A more powerful M60 version will follow with less range but quicker acceleration; BMW hasn't set its price yet, though it's expected to cost significantly more, possibly $85,000 to $90,000.
This isn't a home energy upgrade story, but it matters to anyone weighing an electric vehicle alongside household electrification plans. If you're considering a heat pump, solar panels, or other upgrades and also thinking about buying an EV, charging speed and range affect how an electric car fits into your daily routine and how much backup power it could offer your home — BMW says the iX4 supports bidirectional charging, meaning it can send power back out, potentially serving as backup power during an outage.
For comparison, the article notes a Tesla Model Y Performance starts cheaper, at $57,990, than BMW's base iX4. If you're cross-shopping EVs as part of a broader plan to cut energy costs or add home battery backup, price and charging capability are worth weighing against what any given EV can actually do for your household, not just how far it can drive.
