BMW ramps up iX3 output as orders near 100,000

July 28, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 0

This is car news, not home energy news, but here's what happened. BMW's new electric SUV, the iX3, is selling faster than the company expected. Orders are on track to hit 100,000 since it went on sale last September, and BMW just built its 50,000th unit at a new factory in Hungary, the fastest ramp-up of any new BMW plant. The company added a second production shift in February to keep up with demand.

The iX3 is BMW's first vehicle built on its new "Neue Klasse" platform, with new battery, software, and drivetrain technology. In the US, the 2027 iX3 50 xDrive starts at $61,500 and gets an EPA-estimated range of up to 434 miles, with fast charging up to 400 kW that can add roughly 230 miles of range in about 10 minutes. European versions offer even longer range on a different testing standard, and pricing there starts around $73,000 for the top trim.

For a homeowner, this doesn't change any rebate or energy-efficiency program. But if you're weighing an electric vehicle purchase alongside home upgrades like a heat pump or solar panels, it's a reminder that EV range and charging speed keep improving, and more competitive options are reaching the US market. If you already have or plan to install a home EV charger, faster-charging cars like this make less difference at home, since your charging speed is set by your own charger, not the car's maximum capability.
