BMW is finally making the electric convertible we’ve been waiting for

July 28, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 0

This is a car story, not a home energy one, but here's the gist. BMW is reportedly planning an all-electric version of its i4 convertible for 2028, according to a report citing sources close to the company. It would run on the same "Neue Klasse" platform as BMW's new i3 electric sedan, which is rated at 440 miles of range. Even after losing some range to the weight and wind drag of an open top, the convertible could still land well over 350 miles, which would be unusual for this type of car.

Electric convertibles are rare. Right now the only new one sold in the US is the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore, priced at $206,095 with 229 miles of range, and dealers have reportedly been cutting tens of thousands off that price. A few other electric convertibles exist only in Europe or China. BMW would also reportedly build an electric i4 coupe on the same platform around the same time.

None of this affects anything happening at your house. It's a preview of a future car, not a firm product announcement, and BMW's gas-powered convertible keeps rolling off the line through at least mid-2029 regardless. If you're weighing an EV purchase alongside home upgrades like solar, the usual math still applies: pairing an EV with home solar can lower what you pay to charge it, but that's a separate decision from anything in this report.
