Big Temps, Big Storms, and Climate Change: Talking About Extreme Event Attribution

This is a science explainer, not a story about home upgrades, but it helps make sense of why "climate change" gets blamed for the heat waves, storms, and wildfires many homeowners are now planning around. The field is called extreme event attribution, and it works by comparing what actually happened in a heat wave, storm, or fire to what computer models say would have happened in a world without human-caused warming. The first such study, in 2004, looked at a deadly European heat wave and found climate change had more than doubled its likelihood. Since then, researchers have found climate change tripled the odds of extreme rain during Hurricane Harvey, added over 3 degrees to the 2021 Pacific Northwest heat wave, and made the fire weather behind the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires 35 percent more likely.

Some events are easier to pin on climate change than others. Heat waves are the clearest case, because they track closely with rising temperatures. Hurricanes and wildfires are messier, since things like forest management and storm formation add complexity, but scientists can still point to warmer oceans, higher sea levels, and drier conditions as climate-driven factors that make these events worse.

None of this changes any rebate or program details, but it is useful background for understanding why extreme heat, heavier storms, and wildfire risk keep showing up in conversations about home upgrades like better insulation, air sealing, or heat pumps.
