Believe It Or Not, EV Battery Swapping Is Coming To The US
This news is about heavy trucks, not houses, but it points to where battery technology is heading. A California startup called Revoy has raised $27 million to bring battery swapping to big diesel trucks. Instead of buying a new electric truck, a fleet clips a battery unit between the cab and trailer. The unit powers its own set of wheels and cuts diesel use dramatically, while the truck keeps running on its regular engine as backup.
Independent testing found real-world fuel savings ranging from about 65% to 90%, depending on hills and terrain, with the biggest gains on flat routes. The battery can also recharge itself somewhat through regenerative braking, the same technology that slows an electric car by capturing energy instead of just using brake pads.
For homeowners, there's no direct upgrade or rebate here. But the story is a reminder that battery swapping, long dismissed for passenger cars, is finding a foothold in trucking first because it solves a real cost problem: diesel prices have spiked amid the ongoing conflict with Iran, squeezing freight companies and farmers alike. If swapping proves out in trucking, the underlying technology and cost curve could eventually filter down to smaller vehicles and even home backup batteries, though that's speculation, not something happening yet. For now, this is industry news worth watching rather than anything that changes what's available for your own home or car.
