Autonomous Orange: YMX adds self-driving tech to its electric yard trucks

October 4, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 5

This is industry news about freight logistics, not something that touches home energy upgrades directly, but here's what happened. YMX Logistics, a company that manages trucking yards for large shippers, is adding self-driving technology to its electric yard trucks. These are the compact trucks that move trailers around warehouse and distribution yards rather than driving on highways. YMX is partnering with a company called Outrider under a five-year deal, putting Outrider's self-driving system onto electric yard trucks made by Orange EV.

The self-driving trucks use cameras, radar, and lidar (laser-based distance sensing) along with onboard computing hardware to navigate yards on their own, spotting trailers, other vehicles, and people. An independent safety group, TÜV SÜD, reviewed Outrider's system and found it met its safety standards, even though these yard vehicles aren't required to meet the same federal certification as highway trucks.

For homeowners, this doesn't change anything about rebates, upgrades, or your own energy bills. It's a sign that companies moving freight are leaning further into electric trucks and automation to deal with labor shortages and high diesel prices, which the article notes are around $6.38 a gallon nationally. That broader shift toward electrifying commercial vehicles is part of the same trend driving more electric options in cars and equipment generally, but this specific deal has no direct bearing on home energy decisions.
