APM announces massive electrification program for Port of NY and NJ

August 27, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 28

This is port infrastructure news, not a home upgrade story, but it's part of the same shift toward electrifying heavy equipment. APM Terminals Elizabeth, which handles nearly 30% of container traffic at the Port of New York and New Jersey, has ordered 96 electric terminal tractors (the trucks that shuttle containers around the yard) from Orange EV and 34 electric rubber-tired gantry cranes from Konecranes. That's 110 pieces of heavy equipment going electric, along with the charging infrastructure to support them.

The terminal handles more than 600 vessel calls and 800,000 truck loads a year, so this is a large-scale operational shift, not a pilot program. Along with the new equipment, APM says it's investing in training with regional labor partners to prepare workers for the new electric machines. The Port Authority frames the move as part of its broader goal of reaching net-zero operations.

For a homeowner, this doesn't translate into a rebate or program you can apply for. It's a sign that electrification is expanding well beyond homes and personal vehicles into industrial equipment like port cranes and yard trucks. If you live near the Port of New York and New Jersey, it may mean somewhat quieter, cleaner operations over time as diesel equipment is replaced, but there's no direct action or incentive here for your own house.
