Anti-Bacterial PVC Now Available for Commercial Use
A company called RectorSeal has released a commercial version of its ClearDrain PVC pipe, aimed at grocery stores, convenience stores, refrigeration units, and rooftop cooling systems. The pipe is made with zinc worked into the material, which creates a smooth inner surface that resists bacteria and algae buildup. That buildup, sometimes called white slime, is a common cause of clogged condensate drains in cooling and refrigeration systems.
This news is aimed at commercial and industrial buildings, not homes. The company says independent testing found the pipe up to 1,000 times more effective at resisting this bacterial buildup than standard PVC pipe, cutting slime growth by 98% or more. It's rated for refrigeration systems up to 20 tons, well beyond the size used in a typical house, and comes with a full set of fittings for routing drain lines in commercial refrigeration setups.
For homeowners, there isn't a direct product here to act on. The pipe is being marketed as a way for businesses to avoid clogged drains, chemical treatments, slip hazards from overflow, and water damage across store locations. If a residential version of ClearDrain PVC becomes available or is already sold, the same basic idea, a pipe that resists slime buildup without chemical treatment, could eventually be relevant to home HVAC or refrigeration drain lines. But this specific announcement covers only the commercial and industrial product line.
