America's big but uncertain gas boom

August 28, 2026 · Canary Media · Score: 46

Power companies are planning a huge wave of new natural gas plants across the country, driven mostly by the boom in AI data centers, which need enormous amounts of electricity. A new report counts nearly 380 gigawatts of gas plants announced or in development, on top of about 500 gigawatts already running. But most of these plans are still just proposals. Many lack permits, customers, or even confirmed equipment, and analysts say it is hard to tell which projects will actually get built and which are wishful thinking tied to AI growth that may not pan out as expected.

That said, about 52 gigawatts of gas capacity is already under construction, more than any other country is building. And the pace of new proposals keeps climbing, up 50 percent in just six months, showing real momentum even if the final numbers come in lower. Some developers, eager to avoid long waits for efficient gas turbines, are turning to older, dirtier combustion engines instead. Roughly a quarter of data-center-related gas projects are using this less efficient, more polluting technology.

For homeowners, this doesn't change anything about your own electric bill or equipment right away, but it matters for the bigger picture: more gas plants mean more greenhouse gas emissions and could shape how clean, or not, your local grid's power becomes in the years ahead. It's a reminder that the push to power AI is currently leaning hard on fossil fuels rather than renewable sources.
