Amazon, Constellation sign 20-year PPA to expand Maryland nuclear plant
Amazon has signed a 20-year power deal with Constellation Energy to expand and upgrade Maryland's only nuclear plant, the Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center. The agreement supports more than $3 billion in infrastructure work at the plant and will add about 190 megawatts of new generating capacity, expected online between 2030 and 2032. Constellation says the deal gives it enough financial certainty to relicense the plant for another two decades.
Calvert Cliffs produces roughly 80% of Maryland's clean energy and generates enough electricity for about 1.3 million homes. The power from this expansion doesn't go directly to Amazon's own buildings — it flows into the regional grid, PJM, which serves Maryland and 12 other states plus Washington, D.C. Amazon is drawing 690 megawatts total from the plant (including the new capacity) through this deal and a separate supply agreement to help cover its operations across that region.
For homeowners in Maryland and nearby PJM states, this doesn't change your electric bill or utility service directly, but it does mean more carbon-free power and a longer life for a major nuclear plant feeding the grid you draw from. Big tech companies are increasingly locking in nuclear power this way — Constellation has made similar long-term deals recently with Walmart and Meta. These agreements can affect regional electricity supply and reliability over time, which matters if you're thinking about how clean, and how stable, your area's grid will be in the coming years.
