Aira EV Drives 68% of Wuling Orders at GIIAS 2026
This news comes from Indonesia, not the US, but it offers a look at how small electric vehicles are catching on for tight, urban driving. Wuling Motors, a Chinese automaker with a plant in Indonesia, took 3,290 vehicle orders at a recent auto show, and 68 percent of them were for its new Aira EV, a compact "micro car" built for congested city streets and tight parking.
The Aira EV comes in two versions. The Standard Range model starts around $9,600 and covers up to 205 kilometers on a charge, while the Long Range version costs about $10,800 and reaches up to 301 kilometers. Charging at home on a regular outlet takes about 4.8 to 7.2 hours depending on battery size; a fast charger can refill the battery from 30 to 80 percent in 35 minutes. Buyers strongly preferred the Long Range version, which also comes with extra features like a touchscreen, keyless entry and a backup camera.
For US homeowners, the direct takeaway is limited since this vehicle isn't sold here. But it's a sign of where EV demand is heading globally: smaller, cheaper electric cars designed for daily commuting rather than long road trips, with charging times built around plugging in overnight at home. If similar compact EVs eventually arrive in the US market, the charging math is the same one homeowners already weigh with any EV — how long a home charging setup takes to refill the battery you actually use each day.
