AI Emerging as a Priority for Commercial Service Contractors

September 28, 2026 · ACHR News · Score: 36

This news is about the business side of HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) contracting, not something that changes what's on your roof or in your basement. A new survey of over 1,000 commercial service contractors found that companies are leaning hard into artificial intelligence to run their businesses more efficiently. Sixty-two percent have tried or rolled out AI tools, and a third now call AI a top priority, up sharply from the year before. Contractors expect the technology to help most with scheduling jobs, predicting when equipment needs maintenance before it breaks, and handling estimates or customer questions.

The survey also points to financial pressure in the industry: contractors are focused on improving cash flow and profit margins, and 73 percent say tariffs have significantly raised their costs over the past year. Companies also report slow payment cycles, often waiting weeks to get paid even when they bill customers quickly.

For a homeowner, none of this changes rebates, technology choices, or what to install. But it may explain some things you notice when dealing with an HVAC company, such as automated scheduling, quicker diagnostic visits, or service plans being pushed more often, since nearly half of contractors now have more than half their commercial customers on maintenance agreements. It's also a reminder that rising costs, including tariffs, are being felt across the industry, which could show up in service or equipment pricing over time.
